Young people learnt about biochemistry from the inside – the ADAMED SmartUP Academy in Gliwice is over
19 April 2016
What is pharmacology and production of medicines about? What does DNA tell about humans? How can the genome be changed using genetic engineering methods in order to obtain new physiological features? The answers to these and many more questions were presented to the participants of innovative workshops held by ADAMED SmartUP Academy on 9–10 April 2016 in Gliwice.
During the course, the participants were acquainted with the tasks which biotechnologists face in their everyday work. They also extended their knowledge on molecular biology, uncovered the marvels of genetics and isolated their own DNA during practical classes! The instructors also explained how the genome can be changed using genetic engineering.
Another important thematic block during the course was pharmacology. The young participants got to know what modern medicines are and which techniques are used to produce them. They could test the theoretical knowledge gained in this field during a laboratory class, when they had the opportunity to produce capsules by themselves. Together with the instructors they disproved the myths about vaccinations and assessed if the use of antibiotics in the treatment of infections is appropriate.
Biochemistry is not the only subject of the workshops organised by the ADAMED SmartUP Academy.
In the next months there will also be courses in:
• Medicine – Lublin, 21–22 May 2016,
• Chemistry – Gdańsk, 4–5 June 2016,
• Physics – 11–12 June 2016.
